'Meet The Russian Cowboys Beefing Up The Food Industry (HBO)'

05:16 Jan 24
'Western sanctions were supposed to cripple the Russian economy. But the Kremlin’s tit-for-tat ban on food imports has sparked an unprecedented agricultural boom powered in part by American expertise - and cows. Backed by generous state loans, meat producer Miratorg has bought almost two million acres of Russian land since 2010 - more than quadrupling its staff to 35,000 while lavishly importing everything from its Aberdeen Angus cows to the grass they eat and the horses used to herd them. Now a team of 1,000 homegrown cowboys - who were initially trained by consultant American cowboys - are overseeing a super-herd of almost 400,000 mother cows; one of the biggest cattle operations in the world.
