'Late summer and early fall is when bumble bee colonies are at their largest. These mostly worker bees are gathering food to feed the developing larvae that will become male drones and new queens. The new queens must store up enough energy to survive the winter in hibernation underground. All the rest of the bumble bees will die when frost sets in.
