'Did you know that you can test for life in your soil? How about fungus in the soil under your lawn? Yes. This video is about soil biology, where you can test for it and a major crash course in the life and functions of soil life by the Lawn Creep himself, Mark Paulsen. Last season when I was pulling soil from my lawn, I sent some of it off toward laboratories for their soil life test. You can click the link here to find out more about that. https://www.wardlab.com/submit-a-sample/soil-health-analysis/ I was really curious to see how things look based on how I’ve been feeding the lawn for all of these years. Lawns are a bit of a different animal than a bio diverse landscape. Seeing as how we are only dealing with a singular cultivar, and a perennial crop, the diversity in the soil life can be somewhat limited. My mom has not seen any sort of composting aside from the recycling of my grass clippings, it has had no biosolids or manure placed upon it ever, or any other type of foreign litter or compost. Given that that is the case, I was happy to see that the fungal population in the soil and the bacterial populations in the soil were in good measure. It is often that lawns will run much lower on the bacterial side and definitely on the fungal side. If you are diving deeper and deeper into soils, it may be worth it for you to take a look and see what sort of life you have down there. You may find that changing the way that you were fertilizing or perhaps bringing more organic matter may be beneficial. Bacteria and fungi thrive best in airy and more organic soils.
