Role of Food Waste Disposers in Diverting Food Scraps from Landfills to Beneficial Reuse Michael Keleman, InSinkErator This table discussion describes the role food waste dispos¬ers play in keeping organic waste out of landfills and reusing their byproducts. With increased pressure on municipalities to reduce organics entering landfills, the traditional use of food waste disposers can be viewed as a positive alternative to other forms of managing food waste. Together with the beneficial reuse of biosolids and energy capture at wastewater treatment plants, managing food waste using disposers and wastewater treatment is the greener holistic method. Modern methods of handling organic food waste, including the positive and negative aspects, are reviewed, as well as some of the misconceptions about the use of food waste disposers.'
