'I used the radial arm saw I recently brought home to make a homemade passive food dehydrator. Once I got my saw home I immediately got the idea to make a frame to hold my food dehydrator racks. I got 9 racks from an old food dehydrator that no longer worked and I have been using them in the gas oven with the pilot light. But this is a slow process and we have a lot of apples to preserve now. I had some scrap lumber laying around from a project that I did not finish so I decided to use one of these boards to make my rack. I used the radial arm saw for the entire project from start to finish. I first cut the board into two 24 inch lengths. Then I measured out where the racks will go and used the radial arm saw to cut slots for the racks to slide into. By raising the height of the cutting blade I am able to cut part of the way through the wood. Multiple passes with the blade gives me wider slots. I made 1/2 inch slots to fit the shelves nicely. I made two of these side frames and then cut some 1x3 boards to hold it all together. When I was done I gave it a rough sanding to remove any rough edges. It turned out very well. And just in time too because we have a lot of food to dehydrate now. This is a passive food dehydrator because there is no heat source and no fans. I will put this above the wood stove on a rack to dry our foods. In summer I can use it as a passive solar food dehydrator by putting it out in the sun. For use as a solar dehydrator I will probably cover the rack to protect everything from UV rays and put a passive solar heater under it. Thanks for watching.
